WHAT AM I DOING? DIRECTING!

Stephanie Kyung-Sun Walters is a beautiful emerging playwright and it’s always an honor to work with her. I’m so excited for this.

Esther Choi is your favorite all-American, overachieving-Asian teen except she has a ghost. Anthony Gibson is Esther’s best friend and (spoiler alert) he’s dead. Mr. Choi is Esther’s grandfather and he owns a haunted dry cleaner on Cheltenham Ave. In an (un)likely turn of events, Esther must grapple with grief, loneliness, and winning first chair in high school orchestra, all while living up to her grandfather’s new expectations.

Among the Dead by Hansol Jung

What am I doing? ASSISTANT DIRECTING!

Among the Dead is a gorgeous play, and I’m getting to building my skills with artists I deeply admire.

Ana is a Korean American who travels to Seoul in 1975 to retrieve her recently deceased father’s ashes. Luke is a young American soldier fighting in the jungles of Myanmar in 1944. Number Four is a Korean comfort woman camping out on a bridge in Seoul in 1950, waiting for the return of the young American soldier who fathered her daughter. Three separate time periods collide in a small hotel room in Korea, mediated by a shape-shifting Jesus. Among the Dead is a dark comedy about a family broken apart by betrayed promises, and finding each other again through SPAM, journals, and Jesus. Mostly Jesus.

What am I doing? COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT DESIGN!

Lightning Rod Special is an amazing company, who I have looked up to since I started working in Philly. I’m creating some really dope events!

Alice Yorke and Lightning Rod Special (Sans Everything, Underground Railroad Game) address the misogyny, hypocrisy, and absurdity surrounding the abortion debate in America in this musical satire. Following women at a clinic seeking to terminate their pregnancies, this timely new work uses a pop-musical format to ask tough, important questions about bodily autonomy, race, and who gets to have access. As hilarious as it is incisive.

What am I doing? PRODUCING!

I love my job at Asian Arts Initiative, and I’m really looking forward to this event!

Asian Arts Initiative celebrates the radical spirit of a united international women’s movement by imagining what an inclusive, queer, women of color-led movement might look like. Revisiting Audre Lorde’s statement that caring for oneself is a political act, we will engage artists and advocacy organizations to foster an embodied space of care and joy for women, trans, and non-binary people. Join us for a night of celebration featuring interactive stations, performances, and a queer dance social!
